Biography

After studying fine art and theatre design at Surrey art colleges, I won a place and graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art, London, University College, London.

My speciality was, for the most part, set design, which involved design of stage sets, model-making, painting, and handling of numerous range of media involved in theatre production. My teachers, Peter Snow, and ballet designer and painter, Yolanda Sonnabend, guided my work and understanding.

After some experimentation, I found wood was a favourable surface for my oil works. This became the way forward to producing the works I do today. Currently I am embarking on a series of water-media paintings to create a faster, more fluid process.

I come from an artistic family. A number of uncles/ancestors were professional painters in the 19th and 20th centuries. They exhibited in the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Academy, London, including: Francis Dunbar Marshall Malagola (1918-2001), flower painter: Cecil Kennedy (1905-1997), landscapist: Thomas Kennedy (1900-1983). Cousin David Tremlett, is famed for his modernist mural work, and was short listed for the Turner Prize, 1987. The artist John Ward, R.A, was a friend of my aunt, whom I was fortunate enough to work with a number of times in his large dining room studio at home in Kent. He was always amusing and encouraging.
